FAQ
Q: Who is SD-X Interactive?
SD-X Interactive is a technology company that is a sister company of Publications International, Ltd., a global publishing enterprise. The SDXI is privately held and was started by Lou Weber.
Q: What is SD-X technology?
SD-X technology integrates print and audio to create multidimensional media. SD-X uses a nearly invisible marking system to assign coded values to print. These marks are similar to bar codes. When detected by an SD-X reader, a mark conveys its identity value to the SD-X recognition system that then takes a specific action.
Q: What does SD-X do?
Enabled print comes to life with SD-X. Touching print with an SD-X reader initiates an audio response in English or another language, with the possibility of many different application behaviors. The reader also logs each marking recognition event.
Q: How does SD-X work?
SD-X index codes print on selected areas of a surface. Each marked region has an assigned identity value and will cause a specific response when read by an SD-X reader. The marks are applied during the normal printing process.
Q: What companies have published SD-X enabled material?
In 2010, Replogle Globes introduced an SD-X enabled globe in four languages with 30 modes, thousands of touch points, and over 30,000 sound files. Through a licensing agreement with Encyclopædia Britannica, Publications International released a six-volume science library, fully enabled with SD-X technology. PIL also publishes Brain Games and Interactive Learning sets with SD-X. Through a licensing agreement with the Walt Disney Company, Publications International published eight SD-X enabled Poingo books in 2008. These books are sold at major retailers in the US to critical acclaim and sales success. In 2009, Poingo added eight additional Disney books, along with licensed titles from Nickelodeon, Sesame Workshop, and H.I.T. Entertainment (Thomas and Friends). In 2010, PIL is offering two additional series of SD-X enabled licensed children's books under the My Poingo and Poingo 2.0 brand names.
Q: How did SDXI work with its partner on the Replogle Globe?
As one of the world's top globe manufacturers, Replogle printed and wrapped globes using the index code file provided by SDXI. Both Replogle and SDXI shared content development, with Replogle supplying cartography and SDXI managing research and script writing, along with audio recording and editing in English, Spanish, French, and German. SDXI developed all applications and delivered fully programmed SD-X readers to Replogle FOB Shenzhen.
Q: How did SDXI work with its partner on Poingo?
Working with Poingo creative teams and Disney-provided artwork, SD-X enabled printed pages and produced digital audio. SD-X developed custom application software for each title that includes games and learning experiences for children. Q: Is SD-X enabling limited to books?
SD-X can enable almost any printable surface, from posters to golf balls, without leaving any unattractive or obtrusive marks. SD-X enabling takes up no additional space and is almost invisible, so it can be used on color photographs, artwork, charts, tables, maps, diagrams, product packaging, and logos.
Q: What is an SD-X reader?
An SD-X reader is a sensor that identifies and decodes SD-X markings on a printed surface.
Q: What's inside an SD-X reader?
A general purpose computing system, an audio system with a speaker and/or headset jack, data storage that carries application programs and captured data from recognition events, and two AAA batteries. Some versions of the reader can communicate via USB with other computing systems to download content and applications, and upload captured data.
Q: Can SD-X readers recognize marks from a distance?
SD-X readers recognize enabled markings within 2mm of the pentop.
Q: Does an SD-X reader need to be held at a particular angle?
SD-X readers readily decode marks at angles ranging from 90 degrees to 30 degrees.
Q: How will SD-X enable my content?
SD-X will first work with you to design the project, using your print files and your digital audio if you have them. SD-X then assigns identity codes and maps responses, creates or packages audio, and develops and tests a custom application for your project.
Q: Will SD-X print my enabled materials?
SD-X can print enabled materials through our worldwide certified printing partners. SD-X will test and guarantee the functionality of SD-X printed materials. SD-X may also train and certify your printer to produce SD-X enabled materials.
